Hurricane Irene leads to 9 deaths in 5 states, including from falling trees and fire

A downed tree blocks a section of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, with City Hall visible, in Philadelphia, Sunday, Aug. 28.

Hurricane Irene had led to the deaths of nine people in five states as of Sunday morning:

CONNECTICUT:

— In Prospect, one person was killed in a fire that Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said apparently was caused by wires knocked down by the storm.

FLORIDA:

— In Volusia County, 55-year-old Frederick Fernandez died Saturday off New Smyrna Beach after he was tossed off his board by massive waves caused by Irene. The Orlando Sentinel reports the high school teacher had a large cut on his head, apparently from hitting the sea floor. He was pronounced dead shortly after being pulled from the water.

— In Flagler County, 55-year-old tourist James Palmer of New Jersey died Saturday in rough surf. Family members say they lost sight of him after he waded into the surf in North Florida. He was pulled to shore and his wife attempted CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

MARYLAND:

— In Queen Anne’s County, a woman was killed when a tree fell on a house and caused the chimney to collapse. Another person in the house was not hurt

NORTH CAROLINA:

— In Nash County, a man was killed after a tree limb fell on him outside his home Saturday morning as outer bands from the storm brought near hurricane-force gusts inland.

— Goldsboro police say a 15-year-old girl died Saturday afternoon after the SUV carrying her and family members collided with another SUV at an intersection where Irene had knocked out power to traffic lights. The victim and other family members were thrown from their SUV, and occupants of both vehicles were taken to the hospital. The girl’s family was returning to northern Virginia from a vacation in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

VIRGINIA:

— Newport News authorities report that 11-year-old Zahir Robinson was killed when a large tree crashed through his apartment shortly after noon. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy’s mother, who was in the apartment, was not injured.

— In Brunswick County, a tree fell across a car Saturday afternoon, killing 67-year-old James Blackwell of Brodnax. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

— Chesterfield County police say a man died at a Hopewell hospital Saturday after a tree fell on a house that he was inside with six other adults. A woman in the house was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Irene slams Jersey shore, shuts down N.Y.C.

Trees blow in a gust of wind, early Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, in New York as Hurricane Irene approaches the region.

NEW YORK — A weakened but still dangerous Hurricane Irene shut down New York and menaced other cities as it roared up the East Coast, unloading a foot of rain on North Carolina and Virginia and knocking out power to 2 million homes. At least eight people were killed.

The hurricane slammed into the New Jersey shore with 75 mph winds early Sunday as New York emptied its streets and subways and waited with an eerie quiet. Irene had an enormous wingspan — 500 miles — and threatened a swath of the nation inhabited by 65 million people.

"The time for evacuation is over. Everyone should now go inside and stay inside," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned late Saturday.

The National Hurricane Center said Irene was 100 miles south-southwest of New York City, moving north-northeast at 18 mph. It was already stirring up seven-foot waves. A 3.5-foot storm surge hit New York Harbor early Sunday, even with the storm hours away.

Tornadoes were reported in Maryland and Delaware, and several warnings were issued elsewhere, including New York and Philadelphia.

States try to gauge damage in Irene's wake

Complete News Coverage: Hurricane Irene (From CBS News)

Irene made landfall just after dawn Saturday near Cape Lookout, North Carolina, at the southern end of the Outer Banks. Shorefront hotels and houses were lashed with waves, two piers were destroyed and at least one hospital was forced to run on generator power.

"Things are banging against the house," Leon Reasor said in the town of Buxton, North Carolina. "I just hate hurricanes."

More than 1 million homes and businesses lost power in Virginia alone, where three people were killed by falling trees, at least one tornado touched down and about 100 roads were closed. Eastern North Carolina got up to 14 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service. Virginia's Hampton Roads area was drenched with at least nine inches, and up to 16 inches in some places.

North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue said Irene inflicted significant coastal damage, but some areas were unreachable because of high water or downed power lines.

By early Sunday, the storm had sustained winds of 75 mph, down from 100 mph on Friday. That made it a Category 1, the least threatening on a 1-to-5 scale. But the storm was still considered highly dangerous, capable of causing ruinous flooding across much of the East Coast due to storm surges, high tides and up to a foot of rain.

This image, made available by the NASA/NOAA GOES Project, shows Hurricane Irene on the East Coast of the United States at 7:40 p.m. EDT on Aug. 27, 2011. The hurricane made landfall 12 hours earlier in North Carolina.

A nuclear reactor at Maryland's Calvert Cliffs went offline automatically when winds knocked off a large piece of aluminum siding late Saturday night. Constellation Energy Nuclear Group spokesman Mark Sullivan said the facility and all employees were safe.

Irene was the first hurricane to make landfall in the continental United States since 2008, and came almost six years to the day after Katrina ravaged New Orleans. Experts say Irene is threatening more people than any other hurricane in U.S. history.

In New York, authorities undertook the Herculean job of bringing the city to a halt. The subway began shutting down at noon, the first time the system was closed because of a natural disaster.

On Wall Street, sandbags were placed around subway grates near the East River because of fear of flooding. Tarps were spread over other grates. Construction stopped throughout the city, and workers at the site of the World Trade Center dismantled a crane and secured equipment.

The New York area's major airports — LaGuardia, Kennedy and Newark — shut down at noon Saturday. Professional sports events were postponed and Broadway theaters were dark.

New York has seen only a few hurricanes in the past 200 years. The Northeast is much more used to snowstorms — including a blizzard last December, when Bloomberg was criticized for a slow response.

Airlines canceled 9,000 flights, including 3,000 on Saturday. The number of passengers affected could easily be in the millions because so many flights make connections on the East Coast.

In Philadelphia, Mayor Michael Nutter declared a state of emergency, the first for the city since 1986, when racial tensions were running high. "We are trying to save lives and don't have time for silliness," he said.

The storm hit Washington just days after an earthquake damaged some of the capital's most famous structures, including the Washington Monument.

In New Jersey, the Oyster Creek nuclear plant, just a few miles (kilometers) from the coast, shut down as a precaution as Irene closed in. And Boston's transit authority said all bus, subway and commuter rail service were suspended Sunday.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett warned that the state will not necessarily be out of danger once the storm has passed.

"The rivers may not crest until Tuesday or Wednesday. This isn't just a 24-hour event," he said.

The deaths blamed on Irene included two children, an 11-year-old boy in Virginia killed when a tree crashed through his roof and a North Carolina child who died in a crash at an intersection where traffic lights were out. Four other people were killed by falling trees or tree limbs — two in separate Virginia incidents, one in North Carolina and one in Maryland. A surfer and another beachgoer in Florida were killed in heavy waves.

As the storm's outer bands reached New York on Saturday night, two kayakers capsized and had to be rescued off Staten Island. They received summonses and a dressing-down from Bloomberg, who said they recklessly put rescuers' lives at risk.

A sign warns commuters on the northbound side of the New Jersey Turnpike of the incoming Hurricane Irene as the state braced itself for the storm, Aug. 27, 2011, Elizabeth, N.J.

Teacher Arrested For Relationship With 14-Year-Old Student After His Classmates Told Police

A Texas teacher has been arrested for having an improper relationship with a 14-year-old student after his classmates told police. Hit the jump to read the rest of the story.

Jordan Lane, 27, was arrested on Wednesday after officers got a tip that she had built up a relationship with the boy.

Lane was a teacher in the Honey Grove Independent School District until she resigned on June 20th.
Police chief Mark Johnson said: ‘I got a tip of a relationship going on between a teacher and a student.
‘And during that time I started talking to the people which was a bunch of high school students.

As I started talking to them I learned that this thing was coming to light that there was more to it than just a rumour,’ he told local station KX11.

Police believe that the relationship happened outside of school, but had begun in lessons.

Mr Johnson said: ‘The improper conduct happened after hours, after school hours.

‘What I gathered through the investigation, the relationship started during the school year but it didn’t really get deep into a relationship until the end of the year.’

Jeff Clark, superintendent of the school board, said: ‘The information currently available to Honey Grove ISD is that the alleged conduct did not occur at school.

‘School officials are cooperating fully with law enforcement, and taking every measure to assure the safety of all students.’

Lane has been released on bond.

Libyan rebels close in on the center of the capital, Tripoli; claim of arrest of Qaddafi's sons

Euphoric Libyan rebels moved into the capital Tripoli on Sunday and moved close to the city's center. The opposition's leaders said Muammar Qaddafi's son and one-time heir apparent, Seif al-Islam, has been arrested.

CBS News correspondent Jan Crawford reports that along the way of the speedy rebel advance, there was no substantial resistance from the Qaddafi troops. All the evidence suggested the soldiers had ditched their uniforms and had simply scarpered.

"They are running like rats so we are doing very good job now!" screamed one rebel, during a dramatic turning of the tides in the 6-month-old Libyan civil war.

"They will enter Green Square tonight, God willing," said Mohammed al-Zawi, a 30-year-old rebel in the force that was moving in. Green Square has been the site of night rallies by Gadhafi supporters throughout the uprising.

The rebels have claimed they are now in control of most of Tripoli, The New York Times reports.

The rebels' surprising and speedy leap forward, after six months of largely deadlocked civil war, was packed into just a few dramatic hours. By nightfall, they had advanced more than 20 miles to the edge of Qaddafi's last major bastion of support.

Along the way, they freed several hundred prisoners from a regime lockup. The fighters and the prisoners - many looking weak and dazed and showing scars and bruises from beatings - embraced and wept with joy.

Thousands of jubilant civilians rushed out of their homes to cheer the long convoys of pickup trucks packed with rebel fighters shooting in the air. Some were hoarse, shouting: "We are coming for you, frizz-head," a mocking nickname for Qaddafi. In villages along the way that fell to the rebels one after another, mosque loudspeakers blared "Allahu Akbar," or "God is great."

"We are going to sacrifice our lives for freedom," said Nabil al-Ghowail, a 30-year-old dentist holding a rifle in the streets of Janzour, a suburb just six miles west of Tripoli. Heavy gunfire erupted nearby.

As town after town fell and Qaddafi forces melted away, the mood turned euphoric. Some shouted: "We are getting to Tripoli tonight." Others were shooting in the air, honking horns and yelling "Allahu Akbar."

Inside Tripoli, widespread clashes erupted for a second day between rebel "sleeper cells" and Qaddafi loyalists. Rebels fighter who spoke to relatives in Tripoli by phone said hundreds rushed into the streets in anti-regime protests in several neighborhoods.

Libyan state television aired an angry audio message from Qaddafi Sunday night, urging families in Tripoli to arm themselves and fight for the capital.

"The time is now to fight for your politics, your oil, your land," he said. "I am with you in Tripoli - together until the ends of the earth," Qaddafi shouted.

The day's first breakthrough came when hundreds of rebels fought their way into a major symbol of the Qaddafi regime - the base of the elite 32nd Brigade commanded by Qaddafi's son, Khamis. Fighters said they met with little resistance.

Hundreds of rebels cheered wildly and danced as they took over the compound filled with eucalyptus trees, raising their tricolor from the front gate and tearing down a large billboard of Qaddafi.

Inside, they cracked open wooden crates labeled "Libyan Armed Forces" and loaded their trucks with huge quantities of munitions. One of the rebels carried off a tube of grenades, while another carted off two mortars.

"This is the wealth of the Libyan people that he was using against us," said Ahmed al-Ajdal, 27, pointing to his haul. "Now we will use it against him and any other dictator who goes against the Libyan people."

Game Names Lil B "Wackest Rapper Of All Time"

Jayceon goes in on the Based God, naming him the wackest rapper of all time in an interview with DJ Vlad.

When it comes to speaking his mind on just about any given subject, Game's never been one to hold his tongue. So when the Compton emcee linked up with the equally notorious DJ Vlad for an interview, it came as no surprise that the end result would find Game naming his personal list of the top five wackest rappers of all time, or that someone as notable as Lil B would end up at the top of that list.

Game explained why the Based God took the top tier position on the list that also includes Lil' Zane, Vanilla Ice and Memphis Bleek. He said that his first and only time listening to Lil B was on "Grove St. Party (Freestyle)" off Lil Wayne's Sorry 4 the Wait, and that his performance on that song was more than enough proof to solidify his position.

"This is crazy man, the wackest rapper [is] Lil B. He's got to get it, " he sadi. "I heard him on [Lil] Wayne's [mixtape] Sorry 4 the Wait [on 'Grove St. Party (Freestyle)'], and that was it. That was it. I couldn't [listen to him again], that was it...I never heard really anything else [he's recorded] that I could even [compare it to] to call it wack, but I remember I heard [his verse] and that's what it was it."

Game also named his former adversary Ras Kass to the number two position on that list. He said that while he respects Razzy as a lyricist, some of the Waterproof MC's actions over the years, most notably those leading to their multiple scuffles over the years, earned him the number two spot.

"Ras Kass - not lyrically, but rappers as a whole. We've got to incpororate that," he explained. "When you're judging, you've got to remember to think about every entity [of his character]. So at first, we were talking about wack at rapping, but now we're talking about wack rappers. The reason why he's wack is becasue he does wack rapper shit. He gets the number two spot, and my fist may just be biased to that, but he slides in at number two."

The full five parts of the interview can be seen at HipHop-N-More.com.

Jim Thome joins exclusive club

Jim Thome becomes the eighth player in MLB history to hit 600 home runs.

Jim Thome became the eighth player in MLB history to hit 600 home runs, with a home run off of Detroit Tigers reliever Daniel Schlereth Monday night. Here are some other facts about Thome's entry into this exclusive club:

• Thome joins Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey, Jr and Sammy Sosa in this exclusive club.

• Only three players reached 600 home runs from 1876 to 1971 but five have now done so since 2002.

• Thome is the first member of the club to hit 599 and 600 in the same game, including consecutive and non-consecutive at-bats.

• For what it's worth, nobody (including Thome) hit 499 and 500 in the same game. Frank Robinson hit them on the same day, but in a doubleheader.

• Thome is the oldest player to reach the 600-HR milestone, but he did so in the second-fewest number of at-bats.

• According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is now the first to hit his 600th home run with more than one runner on base.

• Thome has four multi-homer games in his career as a Twin. The first one was July 3, 2010 against the Rays. Those two homers tied and passed Harmon Killebrew for tenth place on the all-time career homer list.

• When Babe Ruth became the first member of the 600 club, it took 13,911 days for the second member, Willie Mays, to join him. Just 15,174 days later, Thome makes it eight. It was one year and 11 days ago that Alex Rodriguez became the seventh member of the 600-homer club, as he hit his 600th on August 4th last year.

• Thome becomes the fourth member of the club to hit his 600th in the month of August.

• Thome averages one home run in every 13.6 at-bats, fourth on the all-time list (Mark McGwire, 10.6).

• Thome has the most career home runs among players who have played for five or more franchises (Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Twins, and Philadelphia Phillies).

600 HR Club:

NBA: Will Phil Jackson Return to the NBA as the Knicks Head Coach?

As much attention as it received, Dennis Rodman’s choice of clothes for his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame turned out to be the second-most debated question of the weekend.  The first was undoubtedly whether Phil Jackson, on hand to usher his former long-time assistant Tex Winter and Rodman into the Class of 2011, will unretire in the future and return to the NBA sidelines to coach again.

Maybe for the Knicks in 2012.

It’s a topic that will arise every time the Knicks fail to play any defense or show that they need someone other than Mike D’Antoni to figure out how to get the most out of Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire.

Jackson himself didn’t totally rule it out, as he told several reporters, before presenting Winter and Rodman in Springfield’s Symphony Hall.

“You can’t tell,” he said, when asked how he’ll like retirement. “I’ll know in October, November, December, January or February – whenever they start the season – what it’s like to be without ball again.”

The answer to that question and Jackson’s future might have very well been on his right arm. When he walked on the red carpet ahead of Rodman, Jackson was accompanied by his long-time girlfriend and Laker executive Jeanie Buss.

For all the talk about a Jackson making a return after taking a year off, Knick fans should remember that Buss isn’t moving out of Los Angeles anytime soon. That would seem to be a pretty significant obstacle for Jackson coming to New York to coach his old team.

“I think Phil is ready to go off into the sunset, probably for good,” said Hall of Famer and ex-Bull Scottie Pippen. “I think the physical side of it is really starting to take its toll. At this stage of his life, it would take a job like New York to bring him back. That’s the kind of challenge that he would need. But I think he coached his last game.”

After looking worn and puffy when the Lakers were swept out of the playoffs by the Mavs in the second round in May, Jackson appeared refreshed and lighter on his feet on Friday night. But the fact is, he will turn 66 in September and is coming off his 20th season as an NBA head coach.

“I don’t think Phil will coach again, whether it’s New York or anyplace else,” said another Hall of Famer, Charles Barkley. “I think the big issue is age. It’s a young person’s game. Phil’s not 50. He’s accomplished everything and I don’t think he wants to return to the grind. It’s just time. At this stage of his life, I don’t think he wants to get stressed out.

“The other thing about the Knicks is, they’re not a contender,” Barkley added. “I don’t think he’d have the patience to hang around to wait for them to become a contender. The Knicks are a ways away. So even if he came there for one year, it’d be great for box office and great for attention. But they wouldn’t be a contender.”

As his Hall of Fame resume indicates, Jackson lived to coach elite players and championship teams, leaving the game with a record 11 rings. But leaving Kobe Bryant when Bryant is still one of the NBA’s top players may be the biggest tip-off that Jackson won’t be back.

“Why would he want to?” said Jim Cleamons, an assistant coach for Jackson during the Jordan era in Chicago who also worked for Jackson during his 11 years in Los Angeles. “He was in coaching for 20-plus seasons and he’s where he wants to be now. He’s been talking about retiring for a number of years. For Phil, it’s time to let the game move on and do other things that he wants to do with his life.”

Jameis Winston picks Noles over Tide

The nation's No. 1 quarterback has joined the nation's No. 1 player and eight other members of the ESPNU 150 in committing to Florida State.

Jameis Winston (Hueytown, Ala./Hueytown) announced Wednesday on ESPNU that he had chosen the Seminoles over the home-state Crimson Tide and LSU.

"Well you know it's been tough, tough the whole time," Winston said on ESPNU. "I feel confident in my decision. I think I want to be a Florida State Seminole."

It came down to feel for Winston.

"I am just comfortable and that's where I wanted to be," Winston said. "God has blessed me the whole way. I see myself there in the near future."

Defensive end Mario Edwards (Denton, Texas/Billy Ryan), the nation's top prospect, pledged to the Seminoles in March.

Winston's hometown is ony about 50 miles from Tuscaloosa. The young man understands his decision won't be popular.

"Alabama fans are going to hate me," Winston said. "But I am not worried about pleasing fans or people. I just want to help my team win a state championship."

Winston, 6-3 and 195 pounds, is the nation's No. 11 overall prospect. He's sensational in two sports -- football and baseball. For now, because it's August, that means the focus is on football. With Hueytown's fall camp starting Thursday morning, Hueytown coach Mark Scott gets Winston for one more season.

"I think the No. 1 thing that stands out about Jameis is how competitive he is," Scott said. "He's so physically and mentally tough. Sometimes those guys don't like to mix it up, but Jameis has got the mentality of a linebacker. I have never been around someone that competitive. Then you factor in all his athletic ability and you have something special.

"Jameis can throw the ball as well as anyone in nation and he can run the ball as well as anyone in the nation. He can fit any system. He can be that pocket passer or run a Cam Newton style of offense."

Some believe Winston has more of a future at football, while others believe he's destined for the major leagues. Regardless, Scott believes baseball has not taken anything away from his football growth.

"The summer before his junior year Jameis never missed any workout or anything regarding football because of baseball," Scott said. "This past summer he may have missed a day or two. Even so, people have to understand and realize that Jameis is such a quick study on everything and so far advanced physically. He can recognize coverages and make reads faster than anyone I have ever been around."

Baseball scouts like Winston as a centerfielder or pitcher and this past season he also played shortstop. In one game he hit a homeroom from both sides of the plate and during the state all-star game Winston hit a grand slam. While he could play both sports FSU, the allure of professional baseball might be too much to pass up.

"Jameis tells me he wants to play both in college," Scott said. "But I know he will be a first rounder and the thing everyone talks about around here is just how high? I know one thing, Jameis Winston loves football that much. If baseball pays him $3 million when he signs he will be crying because he knows he will really miss the game of football. In the end, it will take a whole lot of money to get him out of football. But that's something we can all figure out when that time comes."

Florida State now has 16 commitments for its 2012 class.

How he fits:
The Seminoles head into the 2011 season with E.J. Manuel at quarterback but still possess a need at the position. While the Seminoles already have a commit from four-star quarterback Sean Maguire, there is still a need for Winston. (Maguire is also a good get for FSU as Winston's prowess on the baseball field could delay his development and possibly even prevent him from ever playing a down in college.) Winston is a player who needs some development as a quarterback, but he's a nice fit for a program under Jimbo Fisher, who has targeted and landed athletic and speedy players. Also keep in mind Winston is the fourth FSU commit from Alabama, adding a little fuel to the recruiting rivalry between the Crimson Tide, which has the No. 3 class in the country, and the Seminoles, who sit one spot ahead of them.
